Herbalife, Sells But Weeds And Illusions

The Belgian consumer protection magazine, "Test-Achats" sues 
the company for multi-level-sales practices forbidden by law.

Herbalife, a well-known multinational specialised in the sale of slimming products and food supplements, benefits mainly from its far reaching network of hierarchically organised independent salesmen. As in the past, Test Achats draws the attention of consumers to the ineffectiveness of the slimming products of the Herbalife range. What is new, however, is that Test Achats has decided to sue this company for its practice of multi-level-sales which is illegal.

The diet products of Herbalife: expensive and not good - For various reasons (not enough proteins, low energy value, too expensive), Test-Achats was always very critical with regard to the diet products of the Herbalife range. Their usefulness in weight control is far from proven.

The reasons for the ineffectiveness of Herbalife's diet treatment are the following: no education to better food practices, products are systematically hypocaloric with health risks, a medicalisation of the way of life by the absorption of special products, disproportionate price compared to results obtained. All the indices of an inadequate approach of the diet coincide to create doubt as to the effectiveness of these supposedly miracle products.

Herbalife, a multi-level-sales network

These last months, Test-Achats has scrupulously analysed the techniques used by the firm. The principal objective of the Herbalife system is to recruit new distributors who must work with a statute of independent. No direct sales to the consumer occur. The methods of recruitment and distribution are varied. However, lately, and in a very aggressive way, disguised "offers of employment" (insofar as Herbalife does not appear as such) flower on the Internet and in the "employment" columns and in free for all letter box distribution. "Budget et Droits" recently carried out a fully fledged investigation (B&D 175, July 2004).

Once attracted, the interested people must take part in training courses which are real brain washing operations. During these courses a distribution contract and a basic parcel (Business pack) are proposed for a sum of 100¬. However, at this stage, the sale of these products is not of primary importance. The supervisors and other members of the "PRESIDENT'S TEAM" are quick to make the trainees understand that in order to rise within the hierarchy they may find it very beneficial to purchase large volumes of products and resell them to other new distributors whom they will have had the good taste to recruit. The higher the level one reaches in the hierarchy, the higher the commissions and the no-claims bonus and the cheaper the purchase price of the products. Regularly, consumers approached to buy products are in fact pushed to become distributors themselves, for example, to obtain reductions on the price of the products for themselves or their family. But obviously the market soon becomes saturated, and the promotion and recruitment campaigns then become increasingly aggressive.

Test-Achats wants to put an end to these dangerous and illegal practices! Test-Achats reckons that the sales system founded by Herbalife is an infringement of article 84 of the law on trade practices.

All the signs of pyramidal sales are cumulated: each member of the network grows rich primarily thanks to the purchases made by the new recruit in a completely closed sales circuit. The most important benefits are obtained not by the sale to the ultimate consumer or by the royalties obtained on the sales of the hierarchically low distributors but by the sales being carried out in a closed circuit. The benefit is mainly due to the extension of the system and this is expressly forbidden by the law. The consumers' organisation has therefore recently instituted Court proceedings against Herbalife, in the form of an action in ceasing of trading under the terms of the law on trading practices.

Test Achats thus wants the law to be respected in the interest of consumers. These latter are too often exposed to such harmful practices. They are unfortunately influenced by unrealisable promises, and this in a precarious economic context where more and more consumers are the faced with financial difficulties and unemployment.

Magic pills don’t make you thinner. And the more magic pills you take the more you’re bound to get sick – and then you’ll be on a magic diet. Well, of course herbs cause effects on man. A recent issue of the Journal of Hepatology reports on over 14 cases of acute hepatotoxicity in users of in Israel and Switzerland. The researchers found it difficult to interpret the findings as they could not ascertain the exact composition of the proprietary formulas, the composition of which can even vary from country to country. Thus, they could not state definitively whether or not the weight loss supplements caused the liver injury, but they thought it important to warn the public that herb-induced severe liver injury might be more common than previously thought. It is interesting to note that 10 cases of hepatotoxicity implicating Camellia sinensis [ed - tea, such as in green tea extract] have been reported also.

Ah, so in Finland all medicine must go through arduous testing and its ingredients listed and it can only be sold at a pharmacy. But as “herbal extracts” are not “medicine” but “foodstuffs” they don’t have to be pre-screened. So next time you go popping in a pill, do ask yourself do you believe in marketing or knowledge?

Six Dietary Supplements Sold By Herbalife Ltd

Contain Dangerous Amounts Of Lead

The Fraud Discovery Institute posted a letter on its website on Monday attributed to Christopher Grell, an attorney in Oakland, California, specializing in product liability. The letter said that recommended daily doses of six Herbalife products contained levels of lead that are dangerous and in excess of what California law allows under its Safe Drinking and Toxic Environment Act of 1994.

The law requires businesses to warn consumers if their products contain chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. An explanation of the law can be found on the website of California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment at: California Law.

 

The six products mentioned in the letter on the Fraud Discovery Institute website are the ShapeWorks Protein Drink Mix, Healthy Meal Nutritional Shake Mix, Tang Kuei Plus herbal tablets, Thermojetics Nature's Raw Guarana instant tea mix, ShapeWorks Cell Activator and Multivitamin Complex.

The letter posted on Monday on the Fraud Discovery Institute website urged California to order Herbalife to place "clear and reasonable warnings on these products so that the consumer is informed that these products contain chemicals known to cause developmental harm." Grell said in an interview on Monday that individual tablets may not exceed California's 0.5 microgram limit on lead in dietary supplements, but he said the daily recommended dosage would result in lead exposure large enough to warrant a warning label.

A document purported to be an invoice from Analytical Laboratories in Anaheim Inc, based in Brea, California, for $5,820 for testing the six products was posted on Fraud Discovery's website. Analytical Laboratories did not reply to calls and an e-mail to discuss any tests.

Last month, Herbalife said that Spain's Ministry of Health had issued an alert cautioning consumption of Herbalife products due to suspicious cases of hepatic toxicity, or liver damage, presumably associated with Herbalife products.

THE DANGERS OF HERBALIFE

Herbalife is a brand of popular herbal weight loss supplements that has come under controversy for its use of stimulants and other questionable ingredients. The brand is marketed and sold through a multilevel marketing system (MLM) in which individual sales representatives recruit others to both sell and consume the product. Herbalife has been investigated by the FDA for claiming that some products dissolve and remove tumors, rejuvenate, increase circulation and produce mental alertness.

Exposure to Toxic Lead Levels

Herbalife products came under scrutiny in 2008 for containing toxic levels of lead, as defined by California's Safe Drinking and Toxic Environment Act of 1994. When taken as directed, two of the company's more popular supplements exposed consumers to 8.5 and 12 times the the maximum recommended daily exposure to lead levels, according to The Fraud Files Blog, an online forensic accounting and fraud commentary website. High levels of lead can compromise the human nervous system and cause brain damage, anemia and other serious disorders. It can also result in death.

Dangers Associated with Ephedra

Many Herbalife products contained notable amounts of ephedrine and ephedrine alkaloids prior to a ban on the use of ephedra in the United States. This ban remains controversial and has been contested by some dietary supplement manufacturers. The result of this challenge meant that small amount of ephedra could be included in herbal and dietary supplements. The FDA has linked ephedra to cardiac arrest and strokes in otherwise young and healthy individuals. Other possible side effects of ephedra exposure include hypertension, insomnia, high blood pressure and other forms of heart disease.

High-Caffeine Content

Many Herbalife products contain caffeine as a metabolism booster. Caffeine can contribute to sleeplessness, nervousness, restlessness and other conditions associated with stimulants. BlogHealthyDiet.com also notes that some people may experience an allergic reaction to caffeine, and advises that you check the ingredients on any Herbalife product you may be using for this and other allergens.

Shellfish and Protein Allergies

If you are allergic to concentrated proteins, you may experience negative side effects from Herbalife products. High levels of protein can upset the body's ability to process protein. Some Herbalife products also contain shellfish, and may cause an allergic reaction as well.

Memang degil tak keruan - in the sense degil yang tak leh di tegur langsung, dan masing-masing perasan yang ilmu di dada mengalahkan professor, tapi keje cikgu, technician atau mat rempit aje pun. Lepas tu, seperti besa, cari reason nak marahkan messenger (aku le tu) yang bawak berita terkini yang mengesahkan bahawa IQnya sebenarnya hanyalah 74. Ada pakar ekonomi barat yang mengatakan bahawa kadar kerugian masyarakat sejagat daripada perniagaan MLM adalah jauh lebih besar daripada kerugian daripada semua skim piramid yang pernah wujud. Pada aku, memang nampak kebenarannya statement tu, sebab kalau korang fikirkan, badigol yang join mana-mana skim piramid adalah mereka-mereka yang betul-betul bahalol dan tak pass matematik, tapi berapa ramai sangat la Forrest Gump kat dalam dunia ni pun. Lebih ramai manusia lagi adalah orang biasa-biasa yang ada pelajaran, dan yang terjoin MLM seperti Herbalife ni pun, kengkadang sebab tak pasti, tak faham atau dihasut dan dipujuk bagai nak rak oleh sedara-mara dan sahabat-handai yang terdekat untuk join. Dan, yang lebih ramai lagi pulak adalah manusia bebal yang penuh dengan tamak haloba, nak kaut keuntungan daripada hasil usaha orang lain kat "base of the pyramid". Memang males... si Meleis neh. Tak lupa pulak, banyak perniagaan MLM itu dah siap ada protection daripada ahli-ahli politik dan dihias mulus dengan pelbagai topeng yang cantik dan gah untuk memberikannya bentuk yang lulus undang-undang keduniaan, sedangkan kelentongan dan penipuan terus-menerus berlaku tanpa henti. Dia orang berfikiran macam Allah tak nampak keje dia orang gitu. Pathetic. 

Apakah yang berlaku di sebalik sistem MLM yang modus operandinya adalah "pyramid-selling" atau "skim piramid berproduk"?
1. Jumlah kerugian adalah sangat besar dengan jutaan manusia terlibat, serta berbillion riggit berpindah tangan daripada jutaan manusia tersebut kepada sejumlah kecil lanun-lanun yang berada di atas rantai piramid.
2. Yang miskin dan yang senang dikelentong akan diperdaya dengan penipuan promosi, "loopholes" undang-undang, dan manipulasi psikologi. Kebanyakan mangsa sekarang adalah daripada negara ketiga (seperti Malaysia), dimana mereka yang "desperate and naive" jadi lauk-pauk syarikat-syarikat MLM daripada Amerika, serta syarikat-syarikat anak peribumi yang dah ikut perangai alkafirun mormon tadi.
3. Kelentongan, rasionalisasi dan cara promosi adalah sama lebih-kurang, kalau korang perasan. Mastermind mengatakan MLM itu dapat meningkatkan taraf ekonomi orang miskin, membebaskan belenggu ekonomi mereka, bermodal yang kecil, membekalkan peluang pekerjaan, dan membantu peserta untuk mencapai kehidupan yang lebih mewah.
4. Seperti mana "abuses" yang pernah berlaku, sejumlah besar dana digunakan oleh syarikat-syarikat MLM untuk mempengaruhi ahli politik di mana-mana negara, sekali gus dapat mengelakkan penggubalan undang-undang yang lebih ketat, serta memberikan gambaran bahawa perniagaan mereka adalah halal. Pengkritik seperti Aidid Mu'addib, dikatakan jenis orang yang "anti-business" dan "loser" dan diugut dengan pelbagai ugutan seperti saman dan lebih lagi dari itu. You better believe it man.

Penipuan di dalam perpindahan dana secara besar-besaran daripada masyarakat bawahan (yang rata-rata tidak sedar ianya berlaku di depan mata mereka) untuk mengayakan sejumlah kecil mastermind di puncak piramid MLM diwar-warkan sebagai satu kaedah bzns yang "legitimate" dan dapat memberi peluang kepada orang miskin untuk jadi orang kaya.
  
Eh, ke mana pulak aku melalut neh? Nak cite pasal Herbalife, pegi cite pasal MLM in general pulak. Anyway, kalau nak diskus pasal syarikat omputeh yang ini, memang banyak nak cerita, sebab syarikat dah wujud sejak 80-an lagik. Tak payah la sampai gitu, korang boleh tanya Uncle Google atau Auntie Wiki - berlambak info korang boleh baca. Isu aku hari ni hanya bits and pieces, here and there. Company ni pun jual benda yang itu-itu jugak - produk menguruskan badan yang merapu (dan rasa macam haramjadah), serta produk makan kesihatan yang orang tarak sekolah yang sanggup telan, nothing new there. Entah mana benda herbanya... wallahu'alam. Kiranya, telan aje la produk herba Herbalife, dan percaya aje la bulat-bulat cakap orang Mormon. Aku dah diskus pasal bahaya makanan kesihatan dan kelentongan industri produk kesihatan dalam entry sebelum ini. Kalau nak tahu dan rajin nak mentelaah, sila luangkan masa membaca entry tu semua. Jangan risau, ianya dalam tulisan rumi dan aku sembang pun dalam bahasa Melayu.

Korang tahu pehal skim MLM seperti Herbalife ni memang menjadi-jadi di Amerika? Satunya sebab sistem politik duit yang diamalkan di Congress dan Senate Amerika, itu semua orang tahu. Tapi, pakar ekonomi Amerika yang dah sound berulang-kali pasal bahayanya industri MLM dan amalan "pyramid-selling" pada berbagai pihak dan kepada orang awam macam tak makan aje, pehal pulak? Bukannya pakai ekonomi tu orang sebarangan, tapi kerajaan Amerika bergerak macam siput-babi aje dalam menangani isu ni - why? 

Pada pendapat aku, sistem kapitalis serta free-market (daripada perspektif MLM) itu, yang diamalkan di Amerika itu adalah satu dakyah kerajaan Amerika itu sendiri, sebab walaupun rakyat dia sendiri ramai yang sengsara kena penangan MLM (khasnya golongan seperti mormon dan lain-lain rakyatnya yang dungu), mereka sememangnya mahukan industri MLM tersebut berkembang pesat ke seluruh dunia. Kalau nak export kerja lanun ni, kena la sacrifice rakyat sendiri dulu, baru bendanya jadi credible. Dan mereka ada social security program, jadi kalau yang kena kencing di Amerika tu merempat miskin, mereka boleh mendapatkan bantuan sara-hidup anytime di sana, no problem. Tapi, rakyat Amerika hanya dalam 300 juta, dan ada 6 billion manusia di luar sempadan Amerika boleh jadi "cannon-fodder" atau kata orang Melayu, "kuli-batak", untuk mereka pergunakan sebagai feeder untuk meraih keuntungan atas angin bagai nak rak, kalau mereka dapat menyebarkan industri MLM ni berkembang ke pelusuk dunia. Anyway, kalau chayanunalip nak buat MLM Herbalife ni, I couldn't care less, because they have their own ideology, like the Americans, like the Jews. Tapi, untuk orang Islam, ideologi kita berbeza sungguh... betul dik? Kalau nak berniaga, kena study dulu ilmu berniaga tu. Itu arahan daripada Nabi sejak 1,400 tahun dulu. Kena fahami dan dalami setiap ciri perniagaan, dan pastikan perniagaan itu telus, tulus dan tiada unsur gharar, serta yang lebih penting - tiada penipuan dan penganiayaan. Kena check dulu company tu sapa punya, dan CEO dan COO dan CFO nya hebat ke tak, atau adakah hanya lanun penyangak aje pun. Itu yang kita kena ketahui sebab nak mengelakkan isu gharar dalam perniagaan. Kena cari info betul-betul sebelum join syarikat alkafirun ni. Pyramid Scheme Alert: Herbalife

Warning Signs of Financial Harm and
Deception Abound at Herbalife

  

Herbalife, one of the oldest and largest America-based multi-level marketing schemes exemplifies most of the classic warnings signs of a financial trap, a pyramid scheme and marketing program that is steeped in deception.

  

Consider recent news and developments:

1. The president of Herbalife resigned after it was disclosed that he had published false academic credentials. 

2. European Health Officials Investigate Herbalife's Product Safety. Spanish Authorities along with other European regulators are investigating potentially dangerous lead levels in Herbalife products. 

3. Charges of fraud and health risks against Herbalife go back to the 1980's. An ABC Evening News report, April 22, 1985 hosted by Peter Jennings detailed controversy over Herbalife diet products and pyramiding sales structure. The health risk issues centered around Dr. Richard Marconi who promoted Herbalife products. It was revealed that Marconi received his Ph.D. through a mail order course from an unaccredited school. In that report other nutritionists described Herbalife products as primarily laxatives and diuretics with potential of potassium deprivation. 

4. Herbalife lures consumers to invest in its "business opportunity" as "Supervisors" - and requires them to buy $3,000 of products. An independent analysis of Herbalife's actual commission payments revealed a top-loaded pay plan in which 85% of all commissions are transferred to less than 1% of distributors at the top, and financial losses suffered by 99% of the rest of the distributors. 60% of the "Supervisors" quit within a year. The average Herbalife payment to the Supervisors is just $10.55 a week. Herbalife must replace all the dropouts each year. 

5. Herbalife has no sustainable customer base. 80% of all its distributors quit the scheme within one year and there is no evidence that the distributors engage in profitable retail selling. The schemes gains its revenue by recruiting unwitting consumers into a bogus "direct selling" business and inducing them to buy "inventory." 

6. The charges of business fraud against Herbalife are not new. A recently certified class action lawsuit against Herbalife and several of its marketing groups makes many of the same charges now leveled against Herbalife – operating an "endless chain" in violation of California law, and causing widespread losses to consumers who are lured by the unproven health claims and false income promises. 

7. The class action case against Herbalife addresses one other area of fraud accusations – the collaboration of Herbalife with infamous "lead generation" schemes. The lawsuit charges that Herbalife distributors not only are lured into a pyramid recruitment scheme but are also induced to purchase thousands of dollars in basically worthless sales "leads" which they are told they will need to "succeed." (99% of all Herbalife distributors never earn a profit.) 

8. A similar 2004 case against Herbalife was settled several years ago with millions paid back to consumers in restitution. The case documented the lead scheme – mostly unknown to distributors and shareholders – that enriches some Herbalife's upliners and further impoverishes the recruits. 

9. Canadian authorities have fined Herbalife in the past for making false income claims.

Asalnya Herbalife ni diasaskan oleh seorang omputeh yang bernama Mark Hughes pada tahun 1980, di mana the grandmother story yang Herbalife war-warkan adalah dia dapat hidayah untuk bukak bzns makanan kesihatan Herbalife ni selepas ibunya meninggal dunia disebabkan oleh terlebih makan ubat farmaseutikal, iaitu pil diet (cerita berinspirasi ni ada kat website Herbalife), sedangkan cerita sebenar daripada koroner yang buat autopsy terhadap Jo Ann Hartmann mengatakan bahawa dia mati overdose painkiller narkotik Darvon (Dextropropoxyphene). Mark Hughes itu sendiri meninggal dunia pada May 2002, selepas 4 hari minum arak tanpa henti (drinking binge), di mana dia dijumpai mati di rumahnya (mansion besar berharga USD27 juta di Malibu), dan daripada pemeriksaan koroner mendapati dia telah overdose ubat anti-depressant Doxepin, serta kadar alkohol yang sangat tinggi dalam darah. MARK HUGHES is a master of the fine art of survival. His Los Angeles-based Herbalife International Inc. is a pyramid outfit that peddles weight-loss and nutrition concoctions of dubious value. Bad publicity and regulatory crackdowns hurt his U.S. business in the late 1980s. But Hughes, 41, continues to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in a $20 million Beverly Hills mansion. He has been sharing the pad and a yacht with his third wife, a former Miss Petite U.S.A. He can finance this lavish lifestyle just on his salary and bonus, which last year came to $7.3 million.

He survived his troubles in the U.S. by moving overseas, where regulators are less zealous and consumers even more naive, at least initially. Today 77% of Herbalife retail sales derive from overseas. Its new prowling grounds: Asia and Russia. Last year Herbalife's net earnings doubled, to $45 million, on net sales of $632 million. Based on Herbalife's Nasdaq-traded stock, the company has a market capitalization of $790 million, making Hughes' 58% worth $454 million.

There's a worm, though, in Hughes' apple. Foreigners aren't stupid. In the end they know when they've been had. In France, for instance, retail sales rose to $97 million by 1993 and then plunged to $12 million last year. In Germany sales hit $159 million in 1994 and have since dropped to $54 million. Perhaps aware that the world may not provide an infinite supply of suckers, Hughes wanted to unload some of his shares. But in March, after Herbalife's stock collapsed, he put off a plan to dump about a third of his holdings on the public.

Contributing to Hughes' woes, Herbalife's chief counsel and legal attack dog, David Addis, quit in January. Before packing up, he reportedly bellowed at Hughes, "I can't protect you anymore." Addis, who says he wants to spend more time with his family, chuckles and claims attorney-client privilege. Trouble on the home front, too. On a recent conference call with distributors, Hughes revealed he's divorcing his wife, Suzan, whose beaming and perky image adorns much of Herbalife's literature.

Meanwhile, in a lawsuit that's been quietly moving through Arizona's Superior Court, former Herbalife distributor Daniel Fallow of Sandpoint, Idaho charges that Herbalife arbitrarily withholds payment to distributors and marks up its products over seven times the cost of manufacturing. Fallow also claims Hughes wanted to use the Russian mafia to gain entry to that nation's market.

Fallow himself is no angel, but his lawsuit, which was posted on the Internet, brought out other complaints. Randy Cox of Lewiston, Idaho says Herbalife "destroyed my business" after he and his wife complained to the company that they were being cheated out of their money by higher-ups in the pyramid organization.

Anyway, what is my point about these 2 cases. Well, kalau founder dan president syarikat dah sah-sah kaki kelentong, apa credibility yang ada tinggal kat Herbalife ni? Tapi apa pun, dasar perangai omputeh sejak zaman-berzaman, korang tengok news kat bawah ni - takde dia orang terkincit pun pasal President syarikat Herbalife tu sebenarnya seorang pengelentong. Janji duit masyuuuuk...

Aku pernah diskus panjang tentang dakyah syarikat komersial tentang isu makanan kesihatan yang pada dasarnya adalah satu kaedah mendapatkan wang-ringgit pengguna dengan cara kelentongan, dan bukannya pulak nak kasi pengguna itu sihat trangtangtang. Artikel Makanan Kesihatan yang aku post bulan Disember lepas adalah perbincangan umum pasal topik ini. Artikel tu pun dalam huruf rumi dan dalam bahasa ibunda, jadi sapa-sapa yang tertinggal bas, silakan ke sana. Satu contoh syarikat komersial (dan MLM pulak tu) yang kuat kelentong orang dalam dunia ni, yang ini ha, Herbalife ni.

Gilos! Spain, Iceland, Switzerland dan Israel mencatatkan kes-kes kerosakan hati (hepatic poisoning) daripada penggunaan produk Herbalife. Are there anyone reading this thinks that I'm making all these up? Penting ke tidak fakta ni dalam berniaga jual makanan kesihatan sebegini? Khasnya penjualan produk alkafirun made in USA, oleh orang Melayu yang duduk bawah tempurung dan talak baca punya olang, untuk disuap pada orang Melayu yang kebanyakannya adalah saudara-mara dan sahabat-handai terdekat si penjual tadi (you know, MLM works that way - closest people to the distributor are the downlines). Yang kat atas tu adalah kes-kes yang "detected" di negara maju, kat Malaysia ni apa cer? Ada case report di KKM tak? I wonder how many. Agak-agaknya ada tak kes-kes jaundice dan cirrhosis atau liver impairment yang muncul kat GH kat JB, Kuching, Alor Setar... yang disebabkan oleh produk Herbalife ni? Is this worth the profit you'd get? Ini style keje orang Islam ke ni kak?

Case-report di atas adalah daripada University of Bern, Switzerland, di mana terdapat 2 kes hepatic injury - satu kes cholestatic hepatitis dan satu lagi cirrhosis (liver failure) terus. Probably both had died by now. Dua-dua mangsa telan produk Herbalife bertahun-tahun, dan ini bermakna "most likely" distributor Herbalife la tu. Dalam MLM sebegini, distributor tu sendiri adalah customer paling utama. Yang itu pun dia orang tak nampak, kelalar btol. Dalam kajian terperinci pakar perubatan, sampel produk Herbalife tu ada kontaminasi bakteria Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis, known also as the hay bacillus or grass bacillus, is a Gram-positive, catalase-positive bacterium, commonly found in soil). Uik! Orang yahudi yang suka membelasah bangsa lain, baik dari segi ketenteraan dan penjajahan, mahu pun dari segi perniagaan, juga ada kes hepatotoxicity daripada angkara Herbalife? Ada 4 kes indeks pada mulanya, di mana ianya membawa kepada penyelidikan lanjut, yang mendapati terdapat 12 kes kesemuanya yang mengalami masalah hepatitis daripada penggunaan makanan kesihatan Herbalife. Sorang selamat dikuburkan, dan 11 lagi sembuh. Tapi yang kelakarnya pulak, ada 3 kes bahalol yang degil gilabab yang dah sembuh hepatitis, tetapi kembali semula menelan produk Herbalife, dan kena hepatitis balik. What the? Ini jenis manusia yang tak percaya kat doktor perubatan ni, tapi taksub gilabab pada hasutan salesmen Herbalife. Doktor perubatan memang takleh percaya sangat pun... agaknya.

Modal syarikat komersial, dan khasnya MLM yang rata-rata sangat parasitik, cukup suka kelentong masa promosi produk, bahawa kalau produk makanan kesihatan itu herba atau daripada sumber semulajadi, ianya menyihatkan manusia dan boleh cure kanser bagai - tapi tak sedar pulak yang berlambak racun-racun (poison) pembunuh yang wujud dalam dunia ni datang daripada pokok, kulat atau benda-benda yang semulajadi jugak. Itulah yang susahnya kalau produk kesihatan dijual oleh orang yang berkiblatkan wang-ringgit dan bukan pulak jenis manusia yang mementingkan kesihatan manusia secara penuh beretika. Kajian di Switzerland (yang lebih awal daripada case-report yang tadi) di atas mengkaji 10 kes "toxic hepatitis" (keradangan hati disebabkan bahan toksik) yang diimplikasikan ke atas produk Herbalife. Liver toxicity tu punya la seksa punya penyakit, korang tahu tak? Sapa-sapa yang dapat liver toxicity tu, yang kulit dan mata mereka kuning macam kunyit, yang kencing warna teh pekat, yang muntah tak henti-henti, yang sakit perut, yang mungkin pulak membawa maut - salesmen Herbalife tu semua ada kesah? Syarikat Herbalife kat Amerika tu pulak, peduli pun tidak dia orang beb. Janji masyuuuuk.

  

Case-report yang ini pulak datang daripada UCLA Med. Center di California, negeri tempat headquarters Herbalife ni terletak. Baru lagi ni - Oktober 2010. Kepada yang menggunakan produk herba untuk menurunkan berat badan, ambik iktibar please. Adakah liver injury dan jarum sebesar gajah yang digunakan untuk ambik biopsi yang dicucuk kat bawah rusuk belah kanan, yang menyakitkan bagai nak rak, satu perkara yang berbaloi dan very smart dalam menurunkan berat badan? Itu belum masuk bab sedekah duit kat salesmen Herbalife lagi tu - dan agihan duit tu kepada beberapa level upline dia orang. Psycho ka apa?

  

  

Yang ini pulak, case-report daripada Iceland, di mana terdapat 5 kes dilaporkan daripada 1999-2008, yang berkait dengan memakan produk kesihatan Herbalife. Itu yang aku hairan tu, pehal la perkara sebegini terus-menerus berlaku, dan Herbalife terus kaya-raya dengan duit penganiayaan dan kelentongan. OK, itu kerja alkafirun, dan aku takde hasrat nak menasihati orang alkafirun kat blog ni, unless dia faham cakap Melayu dan boleh baca rumi, dan dia rela dapat hidayah. Aku tujukan artikel aku ni pada bebudak Melayu yang talak baca punya olang yang menjajap produk ni, dan tak sedar pun dah berapa orang masuk hospital sebab angkara dia. You get me? Itu sebab orang tua-tua cakap belajar rajin-rajin kat sekolah, bila pandai bloeh belajar jadi doktor, dan bila dah besar, boleh kerja menyelamatkan nyawa manusia, dan bukan pulak merosakkan kesihatan sanak-saudara dan sahabat-handai. Dan kalau dah terpelajar, takde la join syarikat MLM macam Herbalife, yang dari setahun ke setahun, lepas satu-satu kes "buat palat" pada pengguna tercatat. Daripada sejak tahun 80-an sampai la sekarang, tak sudah-sudah menyusahkan orang.
  

Satu lagi modal produk Herbalife adalah produk menguruskan badan dalam bentuk shake whatever. Kok iye pun nak kurus, takde gunanya beli beribu produk Herbalife lepas satu tin ke satu tin dik oi, tapi takde pulak pegi jogging atau pegi gym. Dah tu pulak, tak dapat makan sedap-sedap, sebab mengikut kata salesmen Herbalife, makan aje shake rasa haramjadah dia orang, tapi jangan makan nasi dan lauk sedap-sedap gitu... wadefrak? Haiya! Mangang punya kelija. Pada mereka yang confident sungguh pasal produk menguruskan badan Herbalife, dan tak percaya cakap aku ni, nah baca neh:

Clinical studies:

Two clinical studies have been completed on different formulations of Herbalife's Formula 1 protein shake product. The results of the studies, both of which were funded by Herbalife, largely fail to support the claims made by Herbalife advocates. The study of Treyzon et al compared a protein supplement (Performance Protein Powder, Herbalife Intl., Los Angeles) with a similar tasting carbohydrate placebo. The two treatments showed no significant differences in their effects on the primary outcome of body weight. 

Effects on body mass index, waist circumference or fat free mass were also not significantly different. Subjects on the high protein powder lost significantly more fat mass, 1.01 kg, P=0.05. As this was a secondary analysis these findings should be interpreted with caution and regarded as exploratory until confirmed in independent studies. The Lee study used a similar design but a differently named protein powder (ShapeWorks Formula 3, Herbalife). Lee et al found no significant difference in the effect of this protein powder on fat mass compared with placebo. Effects on other body weight and composition outcomes also did not differ significantly between the Herbalife protein powder and placebo. 

In a subgroup analysis, among subjects with dietary compliance ≥ 70%, the high-protein treatment was more effective than the control treatment in reducing body fat. As this was a secondary analysis these findings should be interpreted with caution and regarded as exploratory until confirmed in independent studies. Generally, these studies do not provide convincing evidence that Herbalife protein powder produces more weight loss or body fat loss than a placebo.
  

OK... Itu semua aku ambik daripada Pubmed dan tempat lain, dan korang sendiri boleh double-check. After all, this is the age of the internet. Jangan terus kekal duduk bawah tempurung, baca buku dalam tempurung, dan syok sendiri dalam alam tempurung. Kalau dah ada kes-kes yang sebegitu di merata negara, tak kan nak spin jugak lagi pasal kehebatan produk herba ni dol? Kalau orang alkafirun nak kaya-raya dengan menjual barang dengan merosakkan kesihatan manusia lain, suka hati dia la. Dia orang dah book bilik hotel kat hotel-al-jahannam siap-siap dah, lantak dia la. Yang korang nak join booking hotel yang sama pehal? Yang orang Islam tu nak join jugak jual benda lagha sebegini pada orang Islam yang lain, kejadahnya dol?

Ini MLM made in USA, apa yang musykil sangat pasal shubahah dan keharamannya? Masih tak faham jugak ghararnya bzns sebegini? Nak aku kupas jugak plan pemasarannya? Malas la beb. Bendanya sebijon macam Amway, MonaVie, Vaviesimona, dan lain-lain tu. Sistemnya sempoi aje, melibatkan multi-level dan melibatkan pergerakan wang daripada bawah piramid pergi ke puncak, dan akhirnya ada omputeh jadi millionaire dengan duit orang yang kena kelentong di seluruh dunia. Hebak!

Almost the same structure like all those MLMs in the world today... yang sedang sebok berkeliaran mencari mangsa baru, dan menjanjikan olang talak sekolah jadi millionaire. Perenggan pertama kat atas tu aje dah buat aku nak cirit-birit dibuatnya. Dengan bangganya declare bahawa ianya "offer the best distributor compensation in the network marketing industry with up to 73% going back to it's distributors". Apa maknanya tu beb? Pada penjajap Herbalife, itu menunjukkan syarikat Herbalife sangat pemurah dan mementingkan keuntungan kepada ahli-ahli yang join bzns ni, sebab Herbalife dapat untung sket aje, dan distributor dapat banyak keuntungan. Yabedabedoo! Macam ni punya bzns kalau join, memang boleh kaya cepat kan? Pada Aidid Mu'addib, ini maknanya bahawa untuk setiap RM100 pelanggan bayar untuk bunuh diri makan bahan kimia semulajadi, RM73 diagihkan kepada ntah sapa-sapa uplines yang duduk kat atas si penjual tadi. Dan Herbalife sendiri ambik RM20 keuntungan, dan harga asal produk hanyalah RM7. That is the beauty of MLM system. Barang RM1 jual RM10 atau RM16 atau RM25. Suka hati aje beb, jual RM35 pun boleh. Janji pandai kelentong. Outstanding!

Anyway, kalau ko ada compensation seperti pada Herbalife ni, apa yang akan berlaku dalam bzns sebegini? Amway/Quixtar dah bayar USD150 juta settlement daripada akibat plan pemasaran MLM dia orang. Itu baru saman yang pertama yang betul-betul besar jumlahnya, dengar cite ada lagi akan saman... ada manyak-manyak saman coming. Dan hampir semua syarikat MLM yang wujud di Amerika tu, memang ikut model pemasaran Amway, ubah-suai sana-sini sket-sket. Jadi, Herbalife ni pun, sama jugak. Dan seperti Amway, lepas satu saman ke satu saman kena settle... dari tahun 80-an lagik. Oi! Penjajap Herbalife - masa pep-talk Herbalife, bahalol lanun yang kat atas pentas tu tak cite ke pasal benda neh? Dan korang sendiri tak tanya ke? Dan bila dah balik rumah, takde nak study ke macam yang aku buat ni? Apadaaa?
